Sabbatical leaves are awarded to faculty members of the College according to Indiana University policy. The eligibility requirements, terms of the leave (including rules regarding compensation), and the application procedures are described in the Academic Guide and in the instructions provided by the Vice-Provost for Faculty and Academic Affairs.
Leaves are not automatically awarded according to a schedule but are intended to be used by research active faculty members to pursue research and creative endeavors. Faculty are expected to show evidence of continued scholarly activity. Each application for sabbatical leave will be evaluated on its own merits.
If the number of sabbatical applications could jeopardize the unit's teaching mission Chairs and Directors, in consultation with appropriate departmental committees (e.g. executive, advisory, curriculum) may be asked to provide the Dean with a memo that explains the staffing problems, plots various solutions, and ranks the sabbatical applications for the year.
