The status and privileges of retired faculty are governed by campus policy BL-ACA-A8: https://vpfaa.indiana.edu/policies/bl-aca-a8-status-privileges-retired-faculty-librarians/index.html. The College guidelines interpret that policy within the College context. Any inconsistencies between College guidelines and campus policy are resolved in favor of campus policy.
IU retirees enjoy many benefits, which are described on the IU Human Resources website: https://hr.iu.edu/benefits/retirees.html.
Continued Engagement
Many faculty remain active in research and creative activity following retirement and continue to contribute to the Indiana University community. We encourage retired faculty to keep the College informed of their activities by updating their DMAIs annually and to continue to participate in department, campus, and university events. With the approval of the Director of Graduate Studies, retired faculty may continue to serve on graduate student research committees. Departments also have the option of inviting retired faculty to serve on departmental committees at their discretion. Retired faculty who hold Emeritus status are eligible to run for election to the Bloomington Faculty Council and may be considered for service on university committees.
Retired faculty may continue to use their College faculty research funds for expenses associated with ongoing projects with prior approval from the Executive Associate Dean. Requests for use of research funds should be submitted to the Executive Associate Dean early in the academic year in which retirement is planned, and should include a statement regarding intended uses of the remaining research funds and the approval of the chair. Most approvals are given for three years, with the option of renewal. Please note that purchases and travel using faculty research funds must continue to be managed through IU Purchasing and travel systems.
The COLL+IT staff will also support desktop or laptop computers for retired faculty with prior approval of the Executive Associate Dean.
Retired faculty seeking on-campus office space should send a written request to the Executive Associate Dean early in the academic year in which they plan to retire. The College will make every effort to provide space to retired faculty who remain actively engaged in research or creative activity; such space is likely to be shared with other retired faculty. By campus policy, all retired faculty members are entitled to remain in their workspaces for 60 days after retirement.
Emeritus Status
The awarding of Emeritus status is an honor, designating retired faculty members as having led distinguished professorial careers and as having made significant contributions to the university. Typically, departments consider extending emeritus status at the time of retirement. If recommended by the department, the title should be included on the retirement eDoc that routes through campus approvals.
