Policy on Filling Departmental Administrative Posts (2012; updated 2023)
- Departmental administrative posts such as the Director of Undergraduate Studies, the Director of Graduate Studies, and Associate Chair should ordinarily be assigned to senior, tenured faculty at the level of Associate and Full Professor.
- Under extraordinary circumstances, Assistant Professors and untenured Associate Professors may serve in such posts only after the review and approval of the Dean.
- Non-tenure-track (NTT) faculty may serve in administrative posts that are related to their assigned duties. NTT faculty generally should not be appointed as Directors of Graduate Studies. The appointment of junior NTT faculty to any administrative posts is discouraged.
- The duration of these positions and the accompanying stipends should be made clear at the appointment of the position with at least one full semester notice of any change to the appointment.
- Departmental administrative appointments should be made via an appointment letter from the department’s Chair.
