Biography

Selene Carter, MFA, is a dance maker and scholar specializing in improvisation and somatic dance. She is Associate Chair and Associate Professor in the Department of Theatre, Drama & Contemporary Dance. Her work in anti-racist education includes performances, publications, and workshops. She created Dancing Difficult Dialogues: Embodied Conversations on Racism with Dr. Nya McCarthy-Brown. Selene's research troubles the frame of dance education to build inclusion and cultural relevance. In 2021 she was a CITL DEIJ Fellow and presented Fail Again, Fail Better: Faculty Dis-expertise in Diversity & Inclusion, Encountering Resistance to Creating Equity in Your Teaching, and Practicing Anti-Racist Pedagogy. Selene researches anti-racist, inclusive practices that are created and sustained in qualitative, quantitative and somatic modes of practice. She is committed to the arts as embodied, and self-reflective means to disrupt racism, and to celebrate cultural identities. Selene is focusing on revising faculty policies that support colleagues beyond the scope of  historic Whiteness. She is committed to understanding how justice and compassion are guardrails on the continuum of our DEIJ work in academia and beyond.
